lol. why was this paragraph in my wikipedia article?

"An outspoken advocate for victims of CFS ("Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"), he has received numerous awards from various charities for his tireless work on behalf of victims of the disease. In a tragic irony, he was recently diagnosed with CFS himself. Speaking candidly in an interview with Maury Pouvich about his diagnosis, he inspired fans and other victims with his positive attitude and his wise words, "I may be tired but I'll never tire in the fight against CFS."

that's how ludicrous this wikipedia site is. i only found out about this because someone asked about my support of the CFS cause in an interview. haha

i actually love this paragraph. i wish it were true.

I would have thought you more of a supporter of CSA. What is CSA you ask? Chronic Smart - Ass. ;-). A cause that many of us are staunch supporter and members of.

Oh dear. I noticed that paragraph a day after it was posted and deleted it, but apparently too late.

The awful thing is that while Wikipedia can be as quickly corrected as it is vandalized, we are periodically copied by other sites (like Answers.com) which update much less frequently, so the vandalism may linger on the net far longer than it does on WP.

Another joke paragraph by the same vandal remained in Jane Goodall's article for a month!

I certainly can't blame you for seeing Wikipedia as a joke -- but the fact is people do use it as a basic informational source, so it's in everyone's interest to keep it as clean as possible (which, admittedly, still isn't all that clean).

"In a tragic irony, he was recently diagnosed with CFS himself"... would someone believe this ridiculous joke even if they knew nothing about the person involved???? don't think so!

it's almost like a bad episode of the little house in the prairie... with drugs, crime and smog. and sex, dont forget sex.

it's too much of a "TV tragedy" to believe. later they'll turn jay brannan into a mental clinic patient that owns awesome musical gifts and sees little red birds around his head all day long.

so much fun, wikipedia...

i think the "tragic irony" part gives it away a little. i once read that jewel died. and that was terrifying.

I'd be interested in your take on a famous Wikipedia episode from last winter. Mary Spicuzza, a print journalist, upset because she thought an article about her sister Jeanne Marie Spicuzza was unfairly dropped from Wikipedia, conducted a campaign to "out" the Wikipedia editor whom she thought wronged her sister. She wrote an article explaining how she tried to out him. You can read it here:

http://www.sfweekly.com/2008-02-13/news/wikipedia-idiots-the-edit-wars-of-san-francisco/

However, she was forced to resign from her newspaper, the SF Weekly, for using newspaper resources for "personal reasons." She also violated several journalistic rules, including using sources in her family without revealing as such to readers.

You can read an interesting take on the matter by the editor she tried to "out" here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive372#Attempted_Outing_of_Wikipedia_Editor_User:Griot_by_Tawdry_Tabloid_Journalist

Wikipedia just keeps getting more interesting....

hey jay, i'd like to help out next time you do an event for your CFS support.

seriously though, people post some crazy stuff on wikipedia.

So, you're saying that that wasn't true?

You just broke a little kid's heart.
How do you feel?

I guess if you feel bad about it. You could always just free up your guilt ridden mind by helping the sufferers of CFS.

You would definitely get some points then.

i love wikipedia so i have to defend it. it's a great site for losers with no time like myself. and a great way to look up useless information without having to google endlessly. it sucks that it's potential is ruined by jerks who mess with it like that. that said i'll keep my eye on your page from now on. you and Superman are my top priorities haha... many i wish that was a joke. :-)

Cheers

sorry posting comment twice because a didn't finish a sentence and sounded stupid.

So... since you seem to be paying a lot of attention to your Wikipedia article, why don't you just register for an account, state right on your user page who you are, and then delete BS like this whenever it comes up?

Wikipedia's greatest strength and weakness is that anyone can edit it. That means that the quality of any given article depends on the quality of the people who are keeping an eye on it. *Every* article gets vandalized, but on popular articles, the vandalism is reversed within minutes, if not seconds. Unfortunately, there probably aren't hundreds of people watching your article, so it takes a little bit longer. But there's no reason you can't delete false information yourself.

People aren't encouraged to edit their own Wikipedia pages, but for obviously false information like this, it's no big deal. Just delete it. For more subjective stuff, like whether or not your Wikipedia page should say you're gay; well, that really does come down to Wikipedia policy, but you can and should state your argument on your article's talk page. The people who edit Wikipedia are just that-- people. And most of them are reasonable and understanding, although ultimately every serious editor will be more concerned with the quality of Wikipedia than with your opinion. Which might seem silly, given the ridiculous things you can find on Wikipedia sometimes, but Wikipedia is a two-steps-forward-one-step-back kind of project. It'll never be perfect, but for what it is, it's pretty freakin' amazing. Hopefully, over time, people will learn to read with a critical eye and ignore unsourced statements. Those who won't were probably gullible morons in the first place.

Check out this article; it's more in the spirit of how Wikipedia *should* be used:

Wikipedia is open to the public and it can be messed with.

So unless you see a link to a varified source, you have to take what's said in it with a grain of salt.
