so much selfishness & evil in the world

i just saw an anti-marriage-equality commercial on TV. the fact that people fight so hard against things that DONT AFFECT THEM AT ALL yet RUINS the ENTIRE lives of other human beings is just so beyond my comprehension.

and then watching them turn around and fight so strongly for things they want for their own lives -- their right to carry firearms; their right to practice a religion they choose (nevermind that religion, in my opinion, is the most destructive force on earth - but do you see me trying to make it illegal?); their right to have an abortion; their right to equal pay; their right to social services; their right to make their own money and keep it -- whatever the hell it is that they want for themselves...and sometimes those things DO interfere with the rights of others.

marriage equality does not interfere with anyone's rights to anything.

such a sadistic attitude towards the ENTIRE LIVES OF OTHERS just blows me away coming from any human being, but especially to see it coming from a non-white person. or a woman. or even a religious person.

how about we revert back to the days of slavery? or when black people had to drink from a different water fountain, go to a different school, ride in the back of the bus? would all the black people who are anti-marriage-equality maybe see the light about my right to find someone to spend my life with?

why don't we go back to when WOMEN were basically slaves. couldn't vote. couldn't have real jobs. were hardly even considered people. why don't we go back to THOSE days, and see if any woman speaks out against marriage equality then?

why don't we go back to the 1600s when the very people who came to this continent (raping and killing all those in their path), came here because THEY were being denied their freedoms in Europe?

here's my best idea --

why don't we make Islam the official national religion of the United States, and make all other religions illegal? will all the fucking selfish and sadistic Christians in this country feel so strongly about denying others their rights to pursue "happiness"?

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying gay people all speak out for the rights of others either. some of the worst intolerance, attacks, & alienation i've experienced in my life have come from other gay people. i think gay men in particular are meaner to each other & hold each other to higher standards than even women do to other women, which can be extreme.

but sad realities aside, these are INDIVIDUAL LIVES we are talking about. you're not looking at a "lifestyle" or even a "community", as i see it. you're looking at me. one person who has to BE me every single second of every single day for an entire lifetime. i have to experience every moment of my own life, and i don't get another one. why would you sit around making commercials about how i don't deserve to do my best to make the most of it?

i am not the only one. but neither are you.

You should send that to a newspaper for their opinion section... Since it's actually pretty damn good!!! And right too... me, myself and I at it's best!

But then again, I don't think they would have the guts to publish it... :/

I want to hug you for expressing that sentiment.

Why would people go to all that trouble just to deny equality to people who love each other? It's just plain nasty to make a commercial like that.

I don't understand why someone's gender or the gender of the person they love should be important to anyone else. Being gay isn't illegal, and we can live together, so we are already doing everything they are objecting to - so why should that not be legally recognised by the state?

Can we make a counter ad and upload it on youtube?

That was awesome! I strongly believe in the same principles that you are stating here. I believe in freedom of religion, freedom of choice, and the idea that all people should be considered equal in the eyes of the our government ... with the same rights to pursue their own happiness in any way that they choose (barring, of course, intentional harm to others). Thank you for the post.

Hi Jay.
You know I been thinking the same thing for a very long time.

These people enjoys labeling others and believing themselves superior, going to church and judging us, but you know? I like to believe that we are all the same, even if they don't know or even if they don't care, if they fight to ban other people's rights their own rights could be banned someday, idk maybe one day they'll be unable to decide for us, just imagine how mad they'll be.
They don't want us to be happy because they aren't, do you believe they would do all the shit they do if their lives were full of love? I don't think so.

Jay u hit the nail on the head. But think about the countries that have gay marriage in Europe. They also treat their citizens better and have craddle to grave free health ins for all. So what's up with Capitslism in the USA?
Start making congress pay for their own health ins without special pensions no one else can get.
Stop bashing public employees that traded getting rich for s secure retirement with benefits that are good not great, working with people no one else wants to work with of putting their lives at risk to protect the public.
Sad to say we are a selfish society more interested in media coverage of famous people having drug use orartests than fixing society problems. Why do thousands demonstrate in France and here nothing?
I don't get it. Our politicians are failing us and making themselves rich.

It is baffling to me how women, African Americans, or any group of people who have had to fight tooth and nail for equality can jump on the anti-gay bandwagon. They're sellouts who clearly have short memories and no sense of history. It is basically saying that the conservative Christian caucasion heterosexual males who spread all of the bigotry you mentioned are superior beings that must be obeyed. Such bullshit.

God is man's very worst invention, that's for sure. It's the most extraordinary thing that people are prepared to live their lives by the precepts invented by the sometimes deluded, sometimes self-seeking, followers of this entirely fictional being. The trouble is so many of us are just foolish and gullible, cowardly in the face of those who shout their vile creeds the loudest. We who preach tolerance are always at a disadvantage in the face of the ruthlessness and evil of intolerance.

Well said! And thats exactly what I say about children. No one respects children and gives them the same rights as adults. They talk about it but they dont act about it. They rule kids believing they do it in their interesst. And kids cant speak up because noone listens.

I can see where you are coming from. And I agree with you that equality does not excist at all. Again they talk about it but they dont act about it.

On the other hand, everyone of us is responsible for their own wellbeing and happiness and wasting my breath to fight for equality I will be the loser. Not in terms of giving up but in terms of losing my life (dont take it liturally). I lose my life by living in the future dreaming of something better instead of living the now.

I waste energy by being angry with something and fighting is a losing battle. If someone wants peace live the peace and live your life. If others restrict it work around it. Say your opinion but live it to the best to actually make a difference.

I learned that long ago. Fighting for children myself made everyone of us around unhappy. No I live the life I was fighting for children to have and simply because of that I helped others to think twice about it.

Dont give up fighting for what you believe just change your attitude (your anger against the unfairness to the happiness of enjoying who you are and live it). Spread the words through happiness.

You probably dont even read it, hahaha, but just in case ;)

Jay, As a straight, struggling Christian man, I absoulutly agree with you on everything except the overall Christian comment. While I believe their are zealots and radicals which give all organized religions and movements a bad name. There are a few of us who believe in freedom for all. It is not up to me to judge or condemn anyone. I am suppose to love unconditionally and give people their ability to choose thier on path.I don't believe I have the right to tell anyone how to live there life. I truly believe if we would act as if God makes no Mistakes (or Junk) then Who am I to judge. I think it was Christ who said you with out sin ( in this case Judgement ) pick up the first stone. Some how that woke them up. I believe you should have the ability to marry whomever you choose Straight , Gay , Black or White ,old or young. If you Love someone and are ready for that commitment, more power to you! One of my co-workers gave me this blog and I will continue to follow it.I hope that you will not judge all of us Christians the same going forward ,There are many who see it my way as well. And know that we support you and your rights as a human being. Greg

Jay, your comments about Christians (as if we all think alike) is mistaken, and the comment about Muslims is not well-considered. Do you have any idea what Muslims do to gay folk?

Love you,
Rob

You are SO right, Jay!
And still looking at the USA from Moscow - I feel sorry for my country. You can't imagine how hard it is to be gay here. However there's always a worse country... Iran... others... All we have to do - is find our love - become a housewife :) and be happy - whatever happens.
I've found out about you two hours ago and now writing this message to you. Just wanted to say - Thanks!!! If you were a Moscow guy I would do everything for you to become my beloved housewife!!! ;)

Hugs!

XOXOXO

Jay, I think you're awesome but I cannot believe this post. Up until the paragraph about women and non-white people I was with you all the way.
Do you really think being not able to acquire a piece of paper officially 'validating' a relationship that will last an average of three years is somehow comparable to slavery?
That's actually disgusting.

Of course I campaign for marriage equality (we nearly have it in the UK) and I do think minorities should think twice before trampling on the freedoms of others, but choosing marriage is actually a priveledge of a developed society and being not married is NOTHING akin to being legally not a person, without access to education or healthcare or your own home.
Come on, some perspective really.
