lana del rey

i know you'll never see this, but in the wake of your introduction to the U.S. market, and all the attacks circulating the internet, i want you to know i support you.

i'm really intrigued by the stuff you're doing so far. it's interesting & complex, but not in the usual assault-our-senses-over-the-top sort of way employed by most modern pop singers.

and regardless of how you or anyone may feel about your live performance on SNL, i don't really think it was any better or worse than what a huge majority of successful singers do live. at least you were making sounds with your vocal chords, and not just moving your lips to some overloaded backing track. that's more than a lot of people can say.

the "born to die" video is exquisite. i love it. and video games & blue jeans are really alluring songs.

i don't know the story of how lizzy became lana, but let's just speculate (this could be completely false, but for the sake of argument) that maybe you didn't completely like parts of lizzy, and lana is the person you wanted to become. people tell me all the time that if i don't like certain things about myself, i should just change them. i personally don't believe EVERYTHING in life is a choice, i think that's wildly oversimplifying. yes you can take certain actions to modify or improve or work on certain things, but i don't think you can just CHOOSE the way everything is or turns out in life, including parts of yourself. but if Lana is the person you want to be, and you are taking steps to become her, then you are very likely just following the advice of many of the people who will criticize you for doing exactly what they said you should. of course, those types of people aren't generally dimensional enough to even see that. all they ever do is talk out of alternating sides of their mouth as it serves them best in any given moment.

maybe you've developed a look & a persona for yourself, your life, your art... i don't know. but i can tell from your music that there is something authentic & dark going on underneath the lips and the nails and the hair, and i personally find it intriguing. i look forward to checking out your album, and i hope you don't let this cruel condescending world destroy you.

from what i've seen thus far, i'd pick you over a fuckload of platinum-selling artists.

I heard "Video Games" on XM's Hits and I had to do a double take. The song was too interesting for that station. It belongs on an edgy alternative station.

And "Video games" is actually number 2 in Germany's singles Charts , 3 in Austria , 6 in France and Switzerland ; but nowhere in US Top 100 !!

In this track she sounds like I imagine Pam from "True Blood" would sound if she had a single. Yes, she is fascinating - several things going on in both this song and in Video Games. I look forward to hearing more (but not as much as I look forward to your next tour).

Well said. I love her music, and all musicians sound like crap on SNL

Nothing wrong with being a polarizing force, lana...
This all put you on my map -

And Jay - you rock and then some...

I hadn't heard of this woman before I read your post. I watched the Born to Die video, then immediately Googled her name and found out why everybody was losing their shit on YouTube and elsewhere.

I love how the automatic (and general) consensus seems to be that she was either wasted out of her mind (thanks to drugs and alcohol) or just "nervous."

The truth, at least the way I see it, is that she knew EXACTLY what she was doing. She sang a little less than stellar compared to other performances I've seen (on YouTube) simply because she KNEW full well that it was going to polarize the audience (whether they were in the SNL studio or watching online).

The fact that she was aware of that is fucking BRILLIANT.

And this is coming from someone who had never heard of her before reading your post and was never a fan to begin with.

I may buy her album, I may not.

I just wanted to say that I think it's great of you to show your support for her whether she reads what you've written or not.

Oh, and: I pre-ordered your album last night!

I can't wait to hear it. I also hope that you have a great year! 8)

She has the type of voice that stirrs the soul deep down beneath the layers that we usally use to hide the real person we are from the ever critical eye of the narrow minded world--in other words her voice touches me deep down!

i really dunno why ppl keep bitching about her ''authenticity''. she's an artist with a great voice and tremendous composing music energy. that is undeniable. so, i dont care about if she had a lips job or face lift, as long as she writes good music with good attempt then its all good. ;)
